REAL WORLD DRUG DISCOVERY by Robert Rydzewski is a glitzy 515 page book, on glossy paper, with hundreds of figures and graphs, many in color, disclosing structures of organic chemicals, time courses of metabolism, enzyme kinetics, and economics. Where the discussion concerns a specific organic chemical, e.g., used as a drug, we find a picture of it on the same page. In this way, the author is an excellent communicator. The book is attractive because the writing is slightly informal, and yet the book is highly factual and reliable.

At first, we are provided with a short history of organic chemistry, biotechnology, and genomics (pages 1-13). We then learn about pharmaceutical economics (pages 13-47). We learn the cost of bringing a new drug to market, and that this particular number has been calculated to be one of a number of million dollars, depending on how it is calculated (page 14). We learn of the Hatch-Waxman Act, and how it has encouraged generic manufacturers to unfairly challenge patents held by pharma companies (page 22). We learn about pitfalls facing pharma, namely, market withdrawals, adverse events, blackbox warnings, and competition from generics. We also learn how pharma reduces competition from generics, by creating your own generic, negotiating with insurance companies, and providing over-the-counter status (page 24). We learn various reasons why biologicals don’t go generic.

CONTRACT RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS (CROs). We learn about CROs, which let a startup hit the ground running (without having to buy lab equipment or to hire personnel), but that the disadvantage of CROs is often that they may be just a pair of hands (page 76-79).

PERSONALIZED MEDICINE.
Drug discovery and development is a complex, highly multidisciplinary endeavor in which practitioners have to have knowledge about a disparate range of topics, from chemistry and biology to outsourcing, patent laws and business aspects. It is not physically possible for any one person to have detailed knowledge about all these areas. What is therefore necessary is a book that provides bite-sized chunks about the most relevant aspects of the science, art and commerce of drug discovery and development that will keep scientists, technologists, lawyers and businessmen up to date with the essentials.

Rydzewski’s Real World Drug Discovery admirably fills this void. In clear, comprehensive and sometimes witty prose he describes the most essential aspects of the field. He begins with the basics of drug development, including a history of the industry and the challenges that it had to face along the way. Then, in a series of chapters the author leads the reader through a remarkable range of topics. A sampling of examples makes the impressive diversity of scientific, business and legal topics clear; patent law, Hatch-Waxman and Bayh-Dole acts, generics, outsourcing and patent busting, high-throughput screening, stereochemical aspects, mouse knockouts and RNA interference, process research and manufacturing, gene arrays and pharmacogenomics, biotechnology, pharmacokinetics and metabolism, side-effects, structure-based drug design and computational modeling, FDA rules, mergers and acquisitions, project management and leadership and statistics and trends. And in spite of such broad coverage, Rydzewski pays a remarkable amount of attention to detail.
Overall, this is a very good and very well written book. Any aspiring chemist thinking of entering into the world of pharmaceutical and biotechnology R&D should get this book – it covers a lot of ground that will otherwise take 2-3 years to learn … the hard way.

The first third of the book is focused on the big picture of the current landscape, from the evolving role of big pharma to the struggles of biotech companies.

The second third of the book covers more tactical aspects like project teams and how work in corporations is conducted under projects (for which the new chemist will likely be lucky to only be involved in one or two at once).

The last third of the book tackles specific chemistry issues associated with drug discovery. It should be noted that all of this is in the discovery or "fundamental" research stage (e.g., before clinical trials) – so there is no mention of regulatory compliance or quality systems needs.

Every so often, the author has put in small summary boxes of key topics to drive home his details – this is very helpful and something that I wish more authors would do, especially when writing about complex, interrelated topics.

The minor drawbacks that I found in this book that kept it from being 5 stars for me:

Throughout, there is significant emphasis on the increIDgly successful role of academia in drug development, but zero discussion of some of the more recent innovations such as NRDO (no research, development only) companies. As a result, I walked away wondering if this book was a call to come help industry develop new drugs inside of industry or as a member of academia.

Also missing was a discussion of the various state efforts throughout the U.S.

Review

“A riveting psychological thriller with twists and turns I didn’t see coming. The ending will blow you away. Set aside your day. You won’t be able to put The Good Neighbor down.” —Robert Dugoni, #1 and New York Times bestselling author of My Sister’s Grave

“In The Good Neighbor A. J. Banner plays on many of our greatest fears—that the person we’ve placed our greatest trust in isn’t who we think they are. A fast-paced psychological thriller with a fantastic twist at the end. Not to be missed.” —Catherine McKenzie, bestselling author of Hidden and Smoke

About the Author

A. J. Banner illuminates the darkest corners of the human heart with her stories of suspense. Born in India and raised in Canada and California, she earned degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. She lives with her husband on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State.

I truly don’t understand the hype for this book. Here are a few of its many sins:

– Flaccid, lifeless prose.
– Crammed to bursting with tedious, frivolous detail about the narrator’s tedious, frivolous suburban life.
– Protagonist can hear everything said by someone atop a cliff, over a raging thunderstorm, as she is drowning in a violent river. (No spoilers here; that’s in the prologue.)
– Clumsy, inept foreshadowing that destroys any chance for drama. They say when your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Well, this book’s foreshadowing is what happens when the author has nothing but a big, heavy hammer: "This isn’t over yet. I feel something worse coming on. Only this time it’s not going to be a tree or a fire. It’s going to be less obvious, something insidious."
– Contrived, wooden dialog. See above.
– A double homicide is investigated by a fire marshal. Don’t most towns have some kind of department that specializes in police work? What’s it called, again? Someone should tell the author.
– Every female character is shallow, beautiful, hyper-sexualized, and a threat to the narrator’s marriage. The narrator rarely visualizes another woman without specifying which sexy outfit she pictures her in. If written by a man, one would wonder if the author had ever met an actual woman, or just researched them by watching General Hospital.
– “I grabbed a brick from the Kimballs’ side garden, and dropped it in my sweatshirt pocket as I climbed.” One wonders if the author has ever met an actual brick, or just assumed they are made portable for the suburban woman on the go.
– The fire marshal (rather hilariously) spoils the ending to Backdraft. Does that mean spoilers are acceptable here?

Meta-analysis is becoming more and more important in medical research. In my current job I am working on two projects where I am constructing meta-analyses. The pioneering book on this topic was the book by Hedges and Olkin which was the first to put statistical rigor to research synthesis which had previously been done using very ad hoc methods. I have in the past had experience with using published p-values for combination in meta-analysis. It has been more than twenty years since that book came out. You can look a my listmania on meta-analysis to see the various books thyat are currently on the market. Many are theoretical but do not give a good feel for applications. Various approaches have been proposed. There are texts on Bayesian meta-analyse and meta-analyses based on the profile likelihood approach. Some cover p-value combination tests. Some cover special topics such as effect size estimation, mixed modeling approaches.

This book is introductory and is written so clearly that it is useful to research statisticians and novices. Anyone interested in learning about meta-analysis can go to this book and learn a lot from it. Its outstanding features include its organization which divides the text into 10 topicla areas. Each area contains several chapters. Each chapter begins with an introduction and ends with a review of keypoints in bullet form. Key equations are laid out in boxes. The writing is clear and concise. Important concepts are covered first. While the coverage emphasizes methods that combine effect sizes from multiple studies the coverage is very comprehensive and all approaches and issues are touched on or discussed in detail.

If you want to understand and speak the open source lingo fluently, then Meeker’s latest The Open (Source) for Business is your resource. It unassumingly starts by explaining the basics of software. Then, helpfully dives into open source basics and related intellectual property issues. And, before you know it, you will find yourself enjoying what Meeker does best: skillfully dissecting and organizing much more advanced open sources concepts and problems in the context of corporate merger and acquisitions, litigation, and government regulations. Don’t be surprised if you end up loving the book just a little too much (despite the notoriously unsexy subject matter)! Meeker’s well-written, practical, and approachable book is an opportunity to re-discover your nerdy virtues as you become proficient in open source concepts. At the end of this enjoyable ride, anticipating, navigating, and addressing open source issues will be one of many benefits obtained from reading this book.

The other mainstream books on the subject of Open Source and Licensing are a decade old. This new 2015 book not only covers subjects that have come up since then, but also new ways of thinking and the modern terminology.

Thanks to the ubiquity of open source software today, every technology lawyer will, at some point, have to understand the basics of open source licensing. This book is a great introduction and handy reference that provides both a high level introduction to how the most common open source licenses work, and also practical guidance for common open source issues (both legal and business). Sure, all this information can be found scattered about the web, but you want to pay both for the convenience of having it between two covers and for the expert curation provided by Ms. Meeker, who is among the most respected lawyers in the field.

Robotics, Vision and Control: Fundamental Algorithms in MATLAB 1st ed. 2011 Edition

Robotics, Vision and Control: Fundamental Algorithms in MATLAB (Springer Tracts in Advanced Robotics) 1st ed. 2011 Edition
Author: Peter Corke ID: 3642201431

Review

From the reviews:

“I like the book and the provided code. I think that this book is good to give you an overview of a bunch of key robotics topics … . If you are looking at testing an algorithm, getting a high level understanding, or getting a guide … to use the tool boxes then this book is for you. Also if you are a student looking to learn by implementation … then this book will be good for you.” (robotsforroticists.com, March, 2014)

“Good reading for starters in the field, but also for experienced researchers or practitioners. It is a pleasure to go through this book. It is written like an encyclopedia about robotics and computer vision … also, throughout the entire manuscript one can find the Matlab code for testing the presented theory. The author is also the creator of the two Matlab toolboxes robotics and machine vision, so there is probably no better way to understand and follow the topics than from the current book.” (Catalin Stoean, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1233, 2012)

From the Back Cover

The practice of robotics and computer vision both involve the application of computational algorithms to data. Over the fairly recent history of the fields of robotics and computer vision a very large body of algorithms has been developed. However this body of knowledge is something of a barrier for anybody entering the field, or even looking to see if they want to enter the field ― What is the right algorithm for a particular problem?, and importantly, How can I try it out without spending days coding and debugging it from the original research papers?

The author has maintained two open-source MATLAB Toolboxes for more than 10 years: one for robotics and one for vision. The key strength of the Toolboxes provide a set of tools that allow the user to work with real problems, not trivial examples. For the student the book makes the algorithms accessible, the Toolbox code can be read to gain understanding, and the examples illustrate how it can be used ―instant gratification in just a couple of lines of MATLAB code. The code can also be the starting point for new work, for researchers or students, by writing programs based on Toolbox functions, or modifying the Toolbox code itself.

The purpose of this book is to expand on the tutorial material provided with the  toolboxes, add many more examples, and to weave this into a narrative that covers robotics and computer vision separately and together. The author shows how complex problems can be decomposed and solved using just a few simple lines of code, and hopefully to inspire up and coming researchers. The topics covered are guided by the real problems observed over many years as a practitioner of both robotics and computer vision. It is written in a light but informative style, it is easy to read  and absorb, and includes a lot of Matlab examples and figures. The book is a real walk through the fundamentals of robot kinematics, dynamics and joint level control, then camera models, image processing, feature extraction and epipolar geometry, and bring it all together in a visual servo system.

Pretty much covers all the essentials for programming / control of robots in conjunction with vision systems. Not limited to conventional 6 dof, coordinate based systems. In conjunction with the Matlab tool boxes provided, is an outstanding asset for developing complex robotic / vision systems.

understandable explanation with useful MATLAB examples to graduate students who will potentially use vision and control algorithms in domains of aerospace, robotics, and others.

This is a great book for those who want to practice robotic concepts in MATLAB! The (free) robotics toolbox is a great tool to work with manipulators, and the book has several examples with real robots (like the famous PUMA). It also has some useful tools for mobile robots, but it only deals with the car-like and the quadrotor models. It misses the widely applied unicycle model, although it is ease to adapt the toolbox to work with the unicycle as well.
I didn’t have time to get to the machine vision part, but the final part of the book unites robotics and machine vision, dealing with visual control for robots.
I think it is a very nice book for everybody that works with robotics!

Fear the Dark: Bishop/Special Crimes Unit, Book 16 Audible – Abridged dged
Author: Kay Hooper ID: B015EOG1FE

In New York Times best-selling author Kay Hooper’s new novel, an SCU team investigates a troubling string of disappearances. But how do you find someone who has vanished without a trace? Something strange is happening in the small mountain town of Serenity, Tennessee. People going on routine errands never reach their destination. It’s as if they simply disappear. Over the past few weeks, it’s happened to five men and women – and now a child. The local police chief calls the FBI, and a team from the Special Crimes Unit is immediately sent in. Agents Lucas and Samantha Jordan, partners in work and in life, have very different abilities. Samantha is clairvoyant and Lucas possesses a unique ability to find the lost or abducted. With them are new partners Dante Swann, a medium, and Robbie Hodge, a telepath. The town is already on the edge of panic, but the mysterious events take a sinister turn when a body unrelated to the missing persons case surfaces and one of the SCU agents vanishes. Now, the team’s hunt for the lost has turned into something very personal…and very dangerous.

"What did you sense?"
"Something dark…something really, really dark. And really, really hungry."

FINAL DECISION: An intriguing mystery combined with the presence of some of my favorite SCU characters make this a good entry into the series.

THE STORY: When people begin to disappear seemingly into thin air, two pairs of SCU agents come to a small town to assist the local police. Lucas (who has the ability to find people through their fear) and Samantha Jordan (a clairvoyant) who appeared in HUNTING FEAR join with Dante Swann (a medium) and Robbie Hodge (a telepath). When their investigation leads them to the conclusion that the person responsible for the crimes has powerful psychic powers, the investigators may also be in danger.

OPINION: I am a fan of this series, but admittedly, I like the stories of the characters better than the investigation into the crimes. I liked this one because there was a healthy dose of Noah and MIranda (who are the reason I keep reading this series) and also Lucas and Samantha Jordan who I liked before and am happy to see them again. (I hope we get to see more of the previous couples in the series in the future). I also really liked the developing story regarding the small town cop (who has some mysteries which I hope will be explored more in the future.) I had less interest in the other new characters.

I thought the mystery was very creepy (the best SCU ones are) although there was no way to find out the identity of the perpetrator until it was revealed. Despite that, I thought the drama and the clock ticking to find out what happened to the missing people was good enough especially when combined with the character development.

Why is this book great

1. Page 146. There is a specific scale which clearly defines control issues or extended use of controls in a person’s life to help stabilize PTSD. These control factors can bring a sense of stability to a person but turn off other people. Because of these control issues, I have people turn against me. That hurts me and probably them-which is why they turned against me.

2. Page 175. Brings home FULLY why people do not get help. Anyone who wants to work with those of us who have these PTSD conditions needs to understand this. Not just read the page-have this page burned in our memory. Xerox this page and carry it in your pocket.

3. Page 275. The V’s at the end of the book are the solution to get us somewhat stable from the PTSD mess left in our heads. These V’s can build good action plans. These V’s should be the foundation of everyone’s encounter notes!

This book also teaches all the therapies and treatments out there. The book doesn’t really make judgements. This book just lays out the options. The same could be said for navigating the system. Most people do not understand how navigate the system. Most people do not know-they are about to enter a system. They just want help. They are about to get that help by entering a system. Navigating the system is almost never taught or recognized.

If I had enough money I would buy this book and drop it by air drop all across America.

The down side
The author doesn’t seem to recognize the importance of the amount of veteran’s returning with characteristics of Axis II. Axis II symptoms are in large numbers of current returning veterans. Repeated deployments? I do not know.

There is:
I want you-I hate you.
I am here-I am gone.
This is a soldier’s book. Written by a military psychiatrist whose published articles in scientific and medical journals has been on the cutting edge of military traumatic disability research, Once a Warrior dispenses with doctor-talk and is directed to the grunt at the front who is trying to come home – in every sense of the word.
Using a format that consists of both didactic, plain-talk instruction and a set of self-help exercises, this book addresses what have been called the "signature injuries" of the Iraq and Afghanistan theater wars, posttraumaric stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI), specifically focusing on so-called mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), which usually does not result in dramatic symptoms and impairments like loss of vision, impaired speech, or immobility, but which can produce a wide range of more subtle, yet significantly disabling physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral symptoms. These include dizziness, sleep loss, fatigue, sensory hypersensitivity, impaired concentration and memory, irritability, impulsivity, and depression. In fact, many of the symptoms of mTBI overlap with those of PTSD, often confounding accurate differential diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning.
Early chapters describe the challenges of transitioning from a red-alert war-zone mentality to the vagaries of civilian work and family life. Subsequent chapters provide practical strategies for dealing with tension and stress, improving sleep, avoiding overuse of alcohol and drugs, modulating anxiety levels, managing anger, dealing with irrational guilt and justifiable grief, and using meditation, mindfulness, and narrative approaches to lower stress.

We didn’t try this book 1 initially; we had bought the newer version which at the time was Book 2 Lollipop Logic, Book 2 (Grades K-2). After we finished book 2, I really wished that the author had created more of these books. I would have preferred one 50-page book for each age group (e.g. K, 1st, 2nd, etc.). The enjoyment and the learning that this book created with a fun environment prompted me to order book 1 right away.

While some mention that book 1 is pretty easy, there are a couple more difficult areas in the book for deduction and critical analysis that I suspect most preK’s and K’s would certainly not get without parents help. I also disagree with the reviews that say this is better suited for preschoolers. I think it is age appropriate for most K and 1st graders, and some 2nd graders. The only area that might be pushing 2nd grade with a challenge is the critical analysis. Sadly, critical analysis was only 3 pages (one problem/page). I would have loved to see 50 pages of these, they were very fun puzzles to try to solve. These critical analysis exercises are at the very end of the book. Please NOTE: I did find an error in the answer section for lesson 51 (detailed later).

Yes, this book 1 was still fun and it kept my son’s attention. Yes, we got through it in only a few sittings. However, it was very similar in structure to book 2, and we preferred Book 2.

The first 8 pages are ordering SEQUENCES (i.e. cubes being stacked, heart puzzle being assembled, fruit being picked from a tree, birds hatching in a nest, pumpkin being carved, snowman being built, glasses being filled, cookies being eaten).
